At College And Universities Across America, Students Are

At college and universities across America, students are being constrained to an increased sense of political correctness. This is because students are demanding protection from microaggressions. Microaggressions are words and ideas that seem to have no malicious intent from the outside, but are viewed as a kind of violence nonetheless. Furthermore, professors now need to be concerned about trigger warnings and avoid course content if they believe it may cause a strong emotional response. For instance, some professors avoid teaching about rape law because the subject may cause students distress. However, as demonstrated by an article published by The Atlantic, this new level censorship is bad. This essay will explore how Greg Lukianoff and†¦show more content†¦They explain, â€Å"Jeannie Suk’s New Yorker essay described the difficulties of teaching rape law in the age of trigger warnings.† The example they chose makes it clear that students pursuing a degree in law are not being taught the full scope of information they need to succeed in their careers. Adding on, by keeping students away from any harm to their feelings, they are fostering â€Å"extra-thin skin† which could ultimately result in them not being able to handle any sort of verbal discussion. Therefore, this coddling is having a negative effect and preparing them for failure. Furthermore, they make their argument more convincing through the use of pathos. In addition to a strong appeal of ethos, the article has a strong appeal to pathos. Rather than referring to the students as just students, they say â€Å"what are we doing to our students?† By using the word â€Å"our† the reader is led to believe that the students are their own children. This evokes reader with a sense of concern and responsibility over them. The reader views the issue at hand to be their fault and that it is their responsibility to change the system. While the use of pathos and ethos are able successfully persuade the audience, the use of logos lacks rhetorical appeal. To strengthen their appeal to logos by providing grounds to further support their reasoning, Lukianoff and Haidt reference cases where students used microaggressions and were punished.
